Learning Objectives

After completion of this activity, the participant should be better able to:

Identify the current National Institutes of Health and National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines for breast-conserving surgery versus mastectomy for first-line treatment of early-stage breast cancer (ESBC), and utilize them when making a treatment choice in clinical practice
Cite evidence-based propensities for minority women to receive suboptimal adjuvant therapy for ESBC, discuss practical strategies for improved guidance compliance for these patients, and introduce measures into practice to ensure optimal treatment for all patients
  •   Devise a treatment strategy for postmenopausal, node-negative, and hormone receptor–positive ESBC based on recent clinical trial data supporting the use of aromatase inhibitors as endocrine therapy, and incorporate this into adjuvant treatment regimens for qualified patients
  •   Lead informed and interactive discussions with ESBC patients, provide multiple alternative treatment options with clinical data supporting or refuting the clinical benefit of each, give the patient opportunities to request specific prognosis information and second opinions, and ensure a reasonable level of understanding on the part of the patient at each clinical consultation
