H. Ralph Schumacher Jr, MD, is Professor of Medicine in the Division of Rheumatology at the University of Pennsylvania. He combines teaching, laboratory and clinical research, and patient care at the University of Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center. His interests have included gout and other crystal-associated diseases, synovial fluid, synovial membrane biopsies to study pathogenesis, and osteoarthritis. He has published more than 500 scientific papers, edits the Journal of Clinical Rheumatology, and coordinates OMERACT and Cochrane programs on gout.

Dr. Schumacher reported that he is a consultant to Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America, Inc., Savient Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Pfizer Inc., and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and receives research grants from Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America, Inc.
